Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today confirmed it has held discussions with the Federal Government over the past 15 months concerning the possibility of Canada submitting a bid for a future FIFA World Cup and issued the following statement.
“We are delighted that the Secretary of State for Sport in Canada is solidly behind this initiative,” stated CSA President Jim Fleming. “A successful bid to host the World Cup would do much for the sport in this country and we look forward to continuing these discussions in the weeks and months to come.”
It is widely acknowledged there is a belief within the international football community that the next World Cup should go to the African continent. Numerous other factors are also at stake including the continuing discussions at the international level concerning both the possible rotation of World Cups amongst the Continental Confederations as well as the potential of biennial World Cups as opposed to the current quadrennial format.
The CSA looks forward to continuing discussions with Mr. Denis Coderre, the Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), in furthering this initiative and will offer further comment at an appropriate time in the future.
