Cathy Breda has been a pillar at Canada Soccer for over three decades
Cathy Breda’s remarkable journey with Canada Soccer spans 30 years, from intern to Manager of Administration, shaping the sport’s growth through dedication, adaptability, and a deep love for the game.
Breda’s career with Canada Soccer started with a simple opportunity in 1994—an internship that would ultimately define her professional path. But when her internship came to an end, she was offered a role as Referee and Coaching Coordinator, a position she held for nearly five years. It was during this time that she was given an opportunity that would set the tone for the rest of her career.
“I was given the exciting opportunity to serve as the women’s team liaison at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1999,” Breda said. “Following the successful completion of this project, I was promoted to the Senior Women’s Team Manager position, a role I proudly held for over five years.”
The promotion opened doors for Breda, allowing her to travel and immerse herself in the world of international soccer and experiencing the game from a global perspective.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Breda’s career has been her longevity with Canada Soccer. In a rapidly evolving sports industry, she has remained a key part of the organization, adapting to new challenges and continuing to grow.
“I’m fortunate to collaborate with an exceptional team of professionals in a sport that is continuously evolving, helping elevate soccer in Canada,” she said. “This also allows for a healthy work-life balance.”
Now, Breda serves as Canada Soccer’s Manager of Administration, a role she has held for most of her career. As she celebrates her 30 years with Canada Soccer, Breda continues to play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations within the organization while also embracing new responsibilities.
“I’ve consistently been given the opportunity to grow and develop new skills within the association,” she said. “Recently, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the human resources role I’ve undertaken, and it has been an incredibly rewarding learning experience.”
Beyond the professional growth, Breda emphasized the relationships she has built over the years.
“The lifelong friendships I’ve formed while working at Canada Soccer are something I will cherish forever.”
As a woman in sports administration, Breda has witnessed firsthand the increasing inclusivity and opportunities within the field, and she encourages young women who aspire to work for Canada Soccer to seize the opportunities that come their way.
“It’s a highly inclusive workplace that fosters numerous opportunities for growth and development, all within a fast-paced yet enjoyable environment,” she said.
Reflecting on her career, Breda expressed gratitude for the experiences and the milestones she has been a part of, like witnessing the evolution of soccer in Canada. “I never imagined that during my career with Canada Soccer, I would have the opportunity to be part of an association that hosted both the Women’s and Men’s World Cups.”
Her journey is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and a genuine love for the sport. Cathy Breda has not only witnessed the transformation of soccer in Canada—she has been an integral part of it.
