Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod and defender Sasha Andrews flew to Dallas Thursday to rejoin their US college team. Southern Methodist University threatened to retract their scholarships if the players did not return to the school on Thursday, thus forfeiting their chance to play in Saturday’s final. NCAA schools do not fall under FIFA regulations involving the release of players. It was hoped both would be allowed to stay with the Canadian team but the school insisted the players return for weekend games.
Canadian defender Candace Chapman suffered a broken nose in Wednesday night’s 2-0 semi-final win against Mexico and is listed as day to day. Team medical staff were attempting to have a protective mask made for the speedy defender.
Canada will train at the Rose Bowl on Friday (weather permitting) in preparation for their game against the United States. Both teams have already qualified for the 2003 Women’s World Cup.
