The Canadian Soccer Association gathered its members in Halifax on 4 May to celebrate the year’s successes at its annual Banquet held around the Annual General Meeting. This year’s event was hosted by Soccer Nova Scotia who celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013.
The Canadian Soccer Association gathered its members in Halifax on 4 May to celebrate the year’s successes at its annual Banquet held around the Annual General Meeting. This year’s event was hosted by Soccer Nova Scotia who celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013.
The Canadian Soccer Association Banquet is the annual celebration of Canadian soccer, occasion at which the Association presents its awards.
Wendell MacGibbon, who held roles as player, coach, manager, referee and administrator and a well respected figure of soccer in the Atlantic region, as well as Cindy Tye, former member of Canada’s Women’s National Team and member of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, were presented with an Award of Merit. The Award of Merit recognizes the efforts of those persons who have made a significant contribution to the sport of soccer in Canada in the area of promotion, growth and development, for not less than a period of ten years.
The 2013 Ray Morgan Award was presented to this year’s referee whose performance at the national and international levels was most deserving, Silviu Petresecu, FIFA referee and MLS Referee of the Year.
Nova Scotia’s very own George Athanasiou was awarded the Aubrey Sandford Meritorious Service Award in recognition of his tireless effort to grow the sport of soccer in Nova Scotia and his continued push for excellence in soccer.
The President Award is given in recognition and appreciation of outstanding and unique efforts for an extended period of time, resulting in the positive and constructive development of the world’s greatest game at the national level across Canada. The 2013 President Award was offered as a tribute to the late Les Sinnott, a remarkable individual and true Canadian sport leader.
The evening was also marked by the presence of a special guest speaker, Canada’s Women’s National Team Head Coach John Herdman.
Canadian Soccer Association’s President Victor Montagliani also took a moment to honour a loyal and dutiful servant of the sport of soccer in both Nova Scotia and Canada, former Men’s National Team Head Coach Stephen Hart. President Montagliani presented Hart with a special recognition for his dedication to the game for over twenty years.
Throughout 2013 Soccer Nova Scotia will be celebrating its centennial by hosting several key events including an Active Start festival for U-6 and U-8 players throughout Nova Scotia, a banquet in concert with the Canadian Soccer Association, a tournament where the Canada Games teams from the Atlantic Provinces will vie for the inaugural Centennial Cup, hosting of the Senior Men’s and Women’s National Club Championships in Halifax, and the creation of a Nova Scotia Soccer Hall of Fame.
