Canadian Roster Released

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team head coach Even Pellerud has selected 18 players to face China on September 19 and 21 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the Gordie Howe Bowl. The second match of the two-game series will be televised live on Sportsnet at 7:00 p.m. local time.



Canada has played China 11 times, recording one win on June 8, 2000 at the Pacific Cup in Australia. After ending the game in a 2-2 tie, Canada went on to win in penalty shots.



Returning to the roster is Nova Scotia native Mary Beth Bowie who recently finished a very successful USISL W-1 season with the Boston Renegades. Bowie and the Renegades clinched top spot in the league after defeating the Vancouver Breakers 5-1. As well, Saskatoon native Amy Vermeulen has been called up to the World Cup Team for the first time. Vermeulen has represented Canada at the Under-19 and Under-20 level.



“Despite the tragic events that have occurred in the United States of America, we have been able to recruit a strong group of players for this camp and international games,” said Even Pellerud. “I look forward to playing in Saskatoon and against a strong team like China. It is a continuous challenge for Canada to schedule competitive games at home due to lack of qualification tournaments. This is why it is so important to get a good team like China to Canada.”



During the series Canada will train twice daily at Umea (The Saskatoon Kinsmen Henk Ruys Soccer Centre at 219 Primrose Drive) at the following times:
