Canada’s Women’s National Team returns home for celebration match against Mexico

Canada to host Mexico in Vancouver 4 February 2017 at BC Place

Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team will play at home for the first time since capturing bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games when they take on Mexico in a Women’s International Friendly on 4 February 2017 in Vancouver at BC Place.

The match will be a celebratory homecoming for Canada’s soccer heroes, after they became the first team in over a hundred years to repeat a podium finish at a summer Olympics. Having won all but one of its games at the Rio Olympics, Canada has rose in international rankings to fourth overall in the world.

“Playing at home is incredibly important to us and we are looking forward to sharing this moment with our family – our fans – who have been with us all along this journey,” said Captain Christine Sinclair. “Bringing home this bronze medal and sharing it with the people who believed in us and helped us believe in ourselves means a lot.”

Sinclair, who netted the bronze medal winning goal in her 250th international appearance at the Rio Olympics, made the announcement of the match with Canada Soccer General Secretary Peter Montopoli in Vancouver and Head Coach John Herdman.

“This team is like a family and this match will be about welcoming them home and celebrating a really massive achievement,” said Montopoli. “We will be honouring the members of our bronze medal team, but also all the players and staff who have worked tirelessly for our women’s program over the years. This is really a family, together with our dedicated fans, and we wanted to come back to Vancouver and honour that wonderful bond.”

February’s match will be Canada’s Women’s National Team’s first time back at BC Place since placing sixth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.

“Over 54,000 people came out to see this Canada take on England in 2015 at BC Place,” added Montopoli. “We are really excited to return to Vancouver, where many of our players train and call home, and share this celebration of Canadian soccer.”
