Canada WNT opens camp in Vancouver

As many as 22 players will participate in two-week camp.

Canada’s women’s national team is back to work following a short break after recent international matches in USA and Sweden. As many as 22 players will train daily in Vancouver, BC from 16 April to 1 May 2012, with only those players currently out of club commitments invited to the camp. Canada is currently preparing for the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Canada has already played 11 international matches this year, posting a record of eight wins and three losses. At the end of March, Canada posted a win and a loss, with a 2:1 victory over Brazil on 24 March (in Foxboro, MA, USA) and a 1:3 loss to Sweden on 31 March (in Malmö, Sweden). Earlier in the year, Canada finished second at the 2012 Cyprus Women’s Cup (March) and second at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament (January).

Of note during the 17-day camp window, Canadian head coach John Herdman will attend the London 2012 Olympic Official Draw. Head coach Herdman will fly to London, England on 22 April and attend the Official Draw on 24 April. All 12 women’s teams as well as all 16 men’s teams (including the last of which will qualify on 23 April) will learn their fixtures, opponents and venues for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Football Tournaments.

Canada will participate in the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament from 25 July to 9 August. This will mark Canada’s second participation in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, following a quarter-final finish at Beijing 2008. In advance of London 2012, Canada will face China PR in a home Women’s International Friendly match on 30 May (Moncon, NB, Canada) and then USA in an away Women’s International Friendly match on 30 June (Sandy, UT, USA).
