Canada WNT arrives home to a warm welcome

Canada is looking to put it all out there as hosts of the most important event in women’s football.

Canada WNT arrived home on Thursday evening to dozens of fans came out to the Pearson International Airport to welcome them home ahead of this summer’s main event. The team returned home for a brief camp and then Women’s International Friendly match against England before heading to Edmonton ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015TM opening match on 6 June.

The Canadian team signed autographs and posed for photos with adoring fans, some of whom were struck speechless in the presence of their idols.

“She’ll catch her breath!” called one parent as her daughter gaped at Canada’s captain, Christine Sinclair. “She’s been dreaming of this moment,” she added.
Before heading to Edmonton for the competition opener on 6 June, Canada will play Nigeria on 25 May in a closed-door training match and will also face England at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton on Friday 29 May in what will be their send off match.

Canada is looking to put it all out there as hosts of the most important event in women’s football.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Canada’s coach, John Herdman. “We have a major advantage going into this tournament because we know Canada and we have Canadians behind us.”

Canada kicks off its quest at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ on 6 June when it will face China PR at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. The squad will then face New Zealand (Edmonton, 11 June) and the Netherlands (Montreal, 15 June) with hopes to continue in the competition, which will conclude with the championship match in Vancouver on 5 July.
