Canada wins the Cyprus Cup

Canada’s senior women’s team won the 2008 Cyprus Cup after a 3:2 victory over the United States’ youth team today. Canada won all three of its games in the six-team competition.



Both Canada’s senior team and the United States’ youth team won the respective groups late last week. Canada defeated both Russia (2:1) and Japan (3:0) while the United States’ youth team defeated Scotland and Nederland. While five nations took senior teams, the United States’ entered their U-20 team.

Christine Sinclair was Canada’s top scorer with five goals in three matches. Kara Lang, Julie Armstrong and Jonelle Filigno also scored in the competition.



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners, is currently preparing for the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament which runs 2-12 April in México. Canada needs to finish amongst the top-two teams in the six-team tournament to win a berth in the Women’s Olympic Tournament Beijing 2008.
