Canada wins Group A at Cyprus Cup

Canada completed a perfect group stage with a 2:0 victory over England at the 2011 Cyprus Women’s Cup. Canada won its third-straight match, again without conceding a goal to its opponent. Canada now advances to the championship final to face Netherlands on 9 March 2011.

Canada completed a perfect group stage with a 2:0 victory over England at the 2011 Cyprus Women’s Cup. Canada won its third-straight match, again without conceding a goal to its opponent. Canada now advances to the championship final to face Netherlands on 9 March 2011.



Canada has strung together victories of 1:0 over Scotland, 1:0 over Italy and now 2:0 over England. Emily Zurrer, Jonelle Filigno, Christine Sinclair and Brittany Timko have scored the goals for Canada.



As part of the tournament’s classification system, the top two teams from Groups A and B will play for spots one to four in the rankings. On Wednesday 9 March, Canada will face Netherlands in the final while Scotland will face France in the match for third place.



The bottom teams from Groups A and B combine with the four teams from Group C to determine spots five to 12 in the rankings. England will face Korea Republic in the match for fifth place, New Zealand will face Mexico in the match for seventh place, Italy will face Russia in the match for ninth place, and Switzerland will face Northern Ireland in the match for 11th place.



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, has improved its 2011 record to five wins and one loss. The team is currently preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011 which runs 26 June to 17 July. As for the Cyprus Women’s Cup, Canada is advancing to the final for the fourth consecutive year. Canada won the title in 2008 and 2010 and finished runner up in 2009.
