Canada wins Cyprus Women’s Cup

Canada won the 2010 Cyprus Women’s Cup today with a 1:0 victory over New Zealand. Midfielder Diana Matheson scored the lone goal of the 3 March final at GSP Stadium in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Matheson scored the winning goal with a wonderful strike from distance in the 70th minute. Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, meanwhile, posted the clean sheet with the help of defenders Marie-Eve Nault, Candace Chapman, Emily Zurrer and Rhian Wilkinson. The win gives Canada two Cyprus Women’s Cup titles in three years.



“It feels great to win this tournament,” said national coach Carolina Morace. “For us, this is just a start of a big year.”



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck, is currently preparing for the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup. The confederation championship will automatically qualify two teams for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011.



So far this season, Canada has won all five of its international matches. At the 2010 Cyprus Women’s Cup, Canada won 2:1 over Switzerland, 1:0 over England, 2:1 over South Africa, and 1:0 over New Zealand. The final 2010 Cyprus Women’s Cup standings are:
