Canada moves up on world ranking

Canada gained 47 points and moved up five spots on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking published on Wednesday 20 October. Canada remains the seventh-ranked country in CONCACAF (83rd overall). The October ranking includes Canada’s most recent 2:2 draw against Ukraine on 8 October 2010.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year. Matches played more than a year ago are valued 50% of matches played in the last year (matches played more than two years ago are valued at 30% while matches played more than three years ago are valued at 20%).



Canada gained 60 points on Jamaica this month, but remains five points back of the continent’s sixth-ranked nation. CONCACAF’s top five countries are USA, Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica (who dropped behind Panama). After Canada, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados round out the CONCACAF top-10.



On the overall FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Spain and Netherlands remain the top two countries in the world. The top-10 also features Brazil, Germany, Argentina, England, Uruguay, Portugal, Croatia and Russia.
