Canada moves on with big win

Canada is moving on to Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. Canada won both games in its two-match series with Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, first on the road in Kingstown on 15 June (3:0 win) and then at home tonight in Montréal, QC (4:1 win).



Canada will now face Mexico, Jamaica and Honduras in the CONCACAF semi-final (group 2) from August to November. Canada will play three games at home and three games on the road (two matches against each opponent).



Canada scored seven goals in its two games against Saint Vincent & the Grenadines – four by Ali Gerba, two by Dwayne De Rosario and one by Issey Nakajima-Farran.



The Canadian team had been together for four weeks dating back to its first camp in May in Florida. In preparation for the two match series, Canada also played Brazil (2:3 loss) and Panama (2:2 draw).



Canada’s men’s national team is looking to get back to the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time since 1986. From within CONCACAF, three or four teams (out of 35 total or 24 remaining) will represent the confederation at South Africa 2010. The Canadian men are currently ranked fourth in CONCACAF based on the most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Canada also had a top-four finish at last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup by reaching the semi-final.
