Canada MNT to face Uzbekistan to wrap up Austria series

International Friendly Match

A second match in Austria will wrap up Canada Soccer’s 10-day Men’s National Team camp in preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Qualifiers. Following a Friday 1:1 draw with Azerbaijan, Canada will face Uzbekistan on Tuesday 7 June at the tail end of the camp.

The Canada-Uzbekistan match will be broadcast live on migmultidev-canada-soccer.pantheonsite.io at 10.00 ET / 07.00 PT. The match will be played in Bad Waltersdorf, with the 16.00 local kick off at Thermenstadion Bad Waltersdorf.

Like the upcoming Qualifiers in September, Canada is playing two matches just four days apart. While Tuesday’s opponent will be Uzbekistan, Canada’s focus is September opponent Honduras.

“This will be an opportunity to demonstrate, after four days in between the matches, that we can increase our level of pressing, to add to our attack, and to understand what we can do to win the game in Honduras,” said Benito Floro, Canada Soccer’s head coach.

Like Canada, Uzbekistan are also preparing for upcoming FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers. They are among the final 12 teams in Asia, with their next two matches on 31 August at home against Syria and 5 September away against Qatar.

Canada and Uzbekistan have never faced each other at any level.

For Canada, this camp is getting the team ready for the matches in September, first away against Honduras (Friday 2 September) and then at home against El Salvador (Tuesday 6 September). The second match will wrap up the six-match semi-final round series, with only one of the three nations advancing to the CONCACAF “Hex.”

“We consider that in Honduras the game will be a strong game, but on the pitch, not around the pitch,” said Floro. “That means it will be a real fight, physical and tactical. With this camp, we are focused on developing a very good pressing. The (Tuesday) game will be very important to test that, from Friday, that which was positive continues to be positive, that which was wrong can be rectified, and (that we can) continue growing.”
