Canada holds top-10 position in world rankings

Canada is the 10th-ranked country in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Rankings. It is the seventh-consecutive ranking in which Canada has held a top-10 spot, dating back to the March 2007 ranking. Canada most recently reached the quarter-final stage at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in China.



USA and Germany are still one-two at the head of the standings. USA recently won its third Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in four tries. USA won the gold medal after defeating Canada in the quarter-final, Japan in the semi-final, and Brazil in the final.



Brazil, who has won silver medals at the most recent Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (Beijing 2008) and FIFA Women’s World Cup (China 2007), moved ahead of Sweden into the third-place spot. Korea DPR (fifth) and Norway (sixth) also switch spots as did France (seventh) and Denmark (eighth) and Japan (ninth) and Canada (10th).



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.
