Canada Completes group stage at 2010 Cyprus Women’s Cup

Canada’s women’s national team completed the group phase of the Cyprus Women’s cup with a 2:1 victory over South Africa on Monday. Canada finishes in first place in Group 2 having won all three of its group matches. The Canadian squad will now turn its attention to the Wednesday 3 March Final against Group 1 winner New Zealand. The final will kick off at 17.00 local (10.00 ET / 07.00 PT) from the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

Canada defeated South Africa on the strength of an excellent second half performance which featured goals from Kendra Flock and Christina Julien. For Flock, the goal was her first international goal in just her second appearance for Canada’s women’s national team. Julien’s winner came in the 75th minute. Julien has now scored three consecutive game winning goals for Canada at the Cyprus Women’s Cup.



Canada opened Group 2 play with a 2:1 victory over Switzerland. In a rematch of last year’s Cyprus Cup final, won by England, Canada defeated England 1:0 in its second group match to automatically qualify for the final.



In Monday’s other Cyprus Cup action England and Switzerland drew 2:2 in Group 2. Over in Group 1, New Zealand defeated Scotland 3:1 and Netherlands drew 1:1 with Italy.

1st – Canada – Nine points (five goals scored, two conceded)

2nd – Switzerland – Four points (6-5)

3rd – England – Four points (3-3)

4th – South Africa – Zero points (2-6)

2nd – Netherlands – Five points (6-3)

3rd – Italy – Four points (4-4)

4th – Scotland – Zero points (1-9)



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck, is taking part in the Cyprus Women’s Cup for the third consecutive year. Canada has reached the final in each of the previous two competitions, finishing second in 2009 and first in 2008. Canada’s all-time record at the Cyprus Women’s Cup is seven wins, one draw and one loss.
