Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association announced today it has accepted, in principle, an invitation to the Copa America tournament to be held in Colombia, July 12-29, 2001. Organizers extended the invitation thanks to Canada’s victory at the Gold Cup in February.

The CSA sent a letter stating Canada’s acceptance in principle to Football Confederation President Jack Warner, pending further information on the FIFA Confederations Cup. The bi-annual tournament, featuring the champions of each Confederation, has been tabled at the upcoming FIFA Congress in Zurich on August 3. Canada earned an automatic berth in the Confederations Cup with their Gold Cup win.

“The Copa America is a very prestigious tournament and it’s a great honor for Canada” said Canadian Men’s World Cup Team Head Coach Holger Osieck. “We are very pleased to have been invited.”
