By the numbers: Jonathan David’s 25 international goals

#CANMNT

Jonathan David became just the second Canadian to score 25 international “A” goals for the Men’s National Team when he scored the 1-0 match winner against Panama on a Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas, NV, USA. David reached the milestone in the 25th minute of the Concacaf Nations League Semifinals on a left-footed strike from inside the box after a brilliant ball through from Kamal Miller. The Canadians won 2:0 and advanced to their first Concacaf Grand Final since the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup.

David trails only teammate Cyle Larin in the record books, who incidentally could have scored his 29th career goal on a header had it not been for a tremendous save off the line by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera in the second half.

No Men’s National Team player has ever scored goals quicker than David. Since his debut on 9 September 2018, David has scored 25 goals in just 41 international matches. So far, he has scored in 19 of his 41 matches with hat tricks against Cuba at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and Suriname during FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

When he scored his first two goals in his first Men’s National Team match at age 18, he was in fact the youngest player to score in his debut (second youngest behind only Alphonso Davies). Both of the goals were scored against US Virgin Islands in a Concacaf Nations League Qualifying match with assists from Junior Hoilett, Canada’s one-time all-time leader in assists.

All but one of David’s international goals has been scored in official competitive matches including Concacaf Nations League, Concacaf Gold Cup, and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. He was the top scorer at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and he once set the Men’s National Team record for international goals in a season (eight, since broken by Larin).

Still only 23 years old, David plays his club football at Lillie OSC where he was the third-best scorer in France this past season with 24 goals in 37 matches.
