Brasil to host the world in 2014

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association has awarded the FIFA World Cup 2014 to the Confederaçao Brasileira de Futebol. FIFA president Joseph Blatter made the announcement today.



Brasil was the only country in the running for the 2014 event. Brasil made its formal presentation this morning at the FIFA House in Zurich. Originally, both Brasil and Colombia had shown interest in the FIFA World Cup 2014. The 2014 event had been promised to a South American country (CONMEBOL or Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol).

Brasil previously hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1950. The senior FIFA World Cup has since been hosted every four years. It had previously been hosted in 1930, 1934 and 1938 before the schedule was interrupted by World War II.



Brasil has won the FIFA World Cup a record five times. It won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
