Canada Soccer announced today that Mauro Biello, the Men’s National Team interim head coach, will continue to lead the preparations for Canada’s Copa America qualifier match this upcoming March.
“We have unfinished business, and we are all solely focused on winning and booking our place into one of the world’s biggest tournaments against some of the best competition our sport can offer.” said Mauro Biello, Men’s National Team interim head coach. “This is an important step for our group of players, our program and Canada as the journey continues towards the FIFA World Cup 2026.”
Biello, who was most recently the assistant head coach under John Herdman since 2018, will remain the interim head coach until a new permanent head coach is hired. Biello is a former Canadian international and was the head coach of the Montreal Impact from 2015-2017.
The global search for a permanent Men’s National Team head coach is active and continues.
Canada, ranked 48th in the latest men’s FIFA rankings, will take on 96th ranked, Trinidad and Tobago in a winner-take-all one match play-in series to qualify for the 2024 Copa America. The match will take place on 23 March at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
The winner will face FIFA 2022 World Cup Champions, Argentina in the opening match of the tournament on 20 June at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, and will join Peru and Chile in Group A of the tournament.
