Ashley Lawrence joins Chelsea FC

Olympic champion Ashley Lawrence has joined Chelsea FC in FA Women’s Super League for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Lawrence will join the English club after spending the past seven seasons in France with Paris Saint-Germain FC where she won the Championnat de France in 2020-21 and the Coupe de France in both 2018 and 2022.

“Ashley has established herself as one of the best fullbacks in the women’s game for both club and country,” said Emma Hayes, Manager at Chelsea FC.  “Her ability to get forward, her progressive play into the final third is a standout strength and she can play on both the left and right side. We’re really looking forward to having her with us.”

Lawrence has joined Chelsea FC on a three-year contract and will join the club after the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023.

“We’ve tracked Ashley over a number of years and we are thrilled to bring her in to the club,” said Paul Green, General Manager at Chelsea FC. “Ashley is one of the best attacking fullbacks in the world and will add another dimension to our play.”

Since turning pro in 2017, Lawrence has played 180 club matches with Paris Saint-Germain FC. She was named to the 2016-17 UEFA Women’s Champions League Squad of the Season when Paris Saint-Germain FC finished as runners up in the competition.

“I’m really excited and grateful to be joining such a top club in England and in Europe,” said Lawrence. “There are a lot of emotions, excitement and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, the rest of the players and staff and to next season.”

Lawrence has made 117 international “A” appearances for Canada since 2012 with 97 starts, eight goals scored and 14 assists. She has won an Olympic Gold Medal, an Olympic Bronze Medal, and four Concacaf medals since 2016.

This past season, Chelsea FC finished first in the FA Women’s Super League and lifted their fifth FA League Cup since 2014. Lawrence will play alongside fellow Canadians Jessie Fleming and Kadeisha Buchanan at Chelsea FC in 2023-24.
