Canada’s top clubs are back in action as the 2026 TELUS Canadian Championship kicks off, bringing together the top Canadian men’s professional clubs from across multiple leagues in Canada Soccer’s premier domestic knockout cup competition.

Canada’s Premier Domestic Knockout Cup Competition Returns

Canada Soccer’s TELUS Canadian Championship is the nation’s highest domestic knockout tournament featuring clubs from coast to coast competing for the Voyageurs Cup. Clubs compete in a knockout-style format, with each match contributing to a single objective: raising the Voyageur’s cup and being crowned national champion. The competition plays a key role in connecting Canada’s regional leagues within one unified tournament structure.

More Than Just a Trophy

Winning the TELUS Canadian Championship means lifting the historic Voyageurs Cup, a symbol of national excellence. In addition, the champion secures a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, competing against top clubs from across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, with a pathway to the FIFA Club World Cup.

An Expanded and Evolving Format

Following the introduction of the Canadian Premier League in 2019, the TELUS Canadian Championship has expanded significantly. As of 2026, the competition features 15 clubs, reflecting the continued growth of the domestic game. The expanded format increases the number of fixtures and introduces more cross-league matchups, creating additional opportunities for clubs from different levels to compete against one another within a single elimination structure.

The Preliminary Round

Seven Preliminary Round matches will be played in May, with the winners advancing to the Quarter-Final stage of the competition. The seven winners from the Preliminary Round will be joined by defending champions Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the Quarterfinals, which will be contested as a two-match, home-and-away series in July. Preliminary Round matchups are played in a single-match, winner take all format. The Preliminary Round will feature a number of intriguing match-ups, including an all-Ontario match-up to open the competition on Tuesday 5 May as eight-time Canadian Championship winners Toronto FC and the reigning Canadian Premier League champions Atlético Ottawa. The Preliminary Round will culminate on Sunday 10 May with a unique British Columbia derby featuring Vancouver FC and debutant Langley United that will be played at Willoughby Community Park, incidentally the home pitch to both clubs. Fans can find the full Preliminary Round Schedule here.

National Representation and Development

The TELUS Canadian Championship includes clubs from across the country, providing national representation across multiple provinces and regions. This broad geographic participation supports the visibility and growth of the sport at all levels. By creating meaningful competitive matches between clubs of different levels, the tournament contributes to player development, coaching experience, and overall league progression within the Canadian soccer system.
