2025 Canada Soccer Player of the Year Nominees Announced 

Eight nominees for Men’s and Women’s Canada Soccer Player of the Year; Young (M+W), Futsal, Para Players of the Year announced next week

Canada Soccer will announce its 2025 Canada Soccer Player Awards winners next week. Canadian sports media and coaches will vote for the Canada Soccer Players of the Year from a list of eight nominees from the Men’s and Women’s national programs selected by the respective national team coaching staffs. Canada Soccer coaching staffs from their respective programs will also determine Canada Soccer’s Young Player, Para, and Futsal Player of the Year winners. Finally, fans will vote for the 2025 Allstate Good Hands® Award.  

The Canada Soccer Player of the Year award celebrates Canada’s top two footballers in recognition of their achievements with both the national teams and their respective clubs. The two winners are recognised as co-winners of the award.

Canada Soccer Player of the Year Nominees (Women’s) 

Marie-Yasmine Alidou 

For Canada, Alidou made 12 appearances in 2025, including seven starts, logging 650 minutes. She finished the year tied for the team lead with three goals, all scored during her first international hat trick in Canada’s 7-0 win over Taipei chinois at the Pinatar Cup. She also contributed one assist over the year. 

At the club level, Alidou joined Portland Thorns FC from S.L. Benfica in March 2025. She appeared in 20 matches, starting six, and played 709 minutes during the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. She scored the opening goal in a 4-1 win over Gotham FC on 22 April and added one assist across the season. 

Vanessa Gilles  

For Canada, Gilles appeared in eight matches in 2025, starting six and scoring once. Her goal came in the 2-0 win over Mexico at the Pinatar Cup, a result that secured the tournament title and marked her 50th appearance with CANWNT. 

At club level, Gilles began 2025 with Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, making 13 appearances and logging 1,120 minutes while contributing four goals and one assist. She helped OL Lyonnes win the 2024-25 Première Ligue and reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals. In May, she transferred to FC Bayern Munich, where she has made seven appearances and scored three goals so far in the 2025-2026 season. 

Adriana Leon  

For Canada, Leon made 11 appearances in 2025, including seven starts, totalling 652 minutes. She co-led the team in goals with three, scoring twice in the 4-1 win over Haiti on 31 May in Winnipeg. 

At club level, Leon joined San Diego Wave FC from Aston Villa WFC in February 2025. She made 27 appearances (17 starts), played 1,432 minutes, and contributed four goals and three assists, including a brace in a 5-2 victory over North Carolina Courage on 25 May. 

Emma Regan 

For Canada, Regan made 11 appearances and nine starts in 2025, logging 758 minutes. She scored her first international goal in the 4-1 win over Costa Rica on 27 June in Toronto and provided consistent midfield presence throughout the year. 

At club level, Regan captained AFC Toronto and played every minute of all 28 Northern Super League (NSL) matches; the only player league-wide to do so. She scored three goals and led AFC Toronto to the inaugural NSL Supporters’ Shield and an appearance in the NSL Playoff Final. 

Jayde Riviere  

For Canada, Riviere appeared in six matches in 2025, starting all six and playing 490 minutes. She recorded one assist and earned her 50th cap on 8 April during an international friendy against Argentina. 

At club level with Manchester United WFC, Riviere played 23 matches across the end of the 2024-25 and start of the 2025-26 seasons, totalling 1,831 minutes. She contributed one goal and four assists, including a standout goal in a 5-1 win over London City Lionesses in September, which also marked her 50th appearance for the club. She has also gone the full 90 in all four of the club’s UEFA Women’s Champions League matches to date this season.  

Janine Sonis 

For Canada, Sonis made 11 appearances in 2025, starting nine and logging 807 minutes. She led the team with four assists, all recorded during the 4-1 win over Haiti on 31 May in Winnipeg, which also served as the Desiree Scott Celebration Match. 

At club level, Sonis was a regular starter for Racing Louisville FC, appearing in 27 matches (24 starts) and playing 2,146 minutes. She recorded three goals and five assists, helping her club qualify for the NWSL Playoffs for the first time in its history. 

Holly Ward  

For Canada, Ward made her senior debut on 8 April in Langford and went on to earn seven appearances in 2025, including four starts and 318 minutes. She finished the year with two goals and one assist, including a goal and assist in the 3-1 win over Haiti on 3 June in Montreal. 

At club level, Ward was a key contributor for Vancouver Rise FC, appearing in 28 matches (27 starts) and playing 2,471 minutes. She recorded five assists and scored eight goals, including the championship-winning goal in the NSL Final to secure the inaugural Diana B. Matheson Cup. 

Shelina Zadorsky 

For Canada, Zadorsky appeared in 13 matches in 2025, starting nine and logging 910 minutes. She scored twice, including a penalty in the 4-1 win over Costa Rica on 27 June in Toronto, and was a key figure at centre back for the CANWNT in 2025. 

At club level, Zadorsky made 20 appearances for West Ham United FC Women across the end of 2024-25 and start of 2025-26, starting 19 and playing 1,629 minutes as a key part of the back line. 

Canada Soccer Player of the Year Nominees (Men’s) 

Ali Ahmed 

For Canada, Ahmed made 10 appearances, contributing a goal and three assists, including his first goal for Canada in a 3:0 win over Romania in an international friendly in Bucharest. He provided the match-winning assist on Jonathan David’s goal against USA in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match.  

For Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Ahmed won the 2025 Canadian Championship and was awarded the George Gross Memorial Trophy for Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He also contributed to Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s Concacaf Champions Cup and MLS Cup runs, where the team made the final of both competitions for the first time in club history. In total, Ahmed contributed four goals and thirteen assists across all club competitions. 

Tajon Buchanan 

For Canada, Buchanan appeared in all 14 matches, contributing four goals and one assist. He earned his 50th cap for Canada in the final group stage match of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup in a 2:0 win over El Salvador in which he scored the game’s second goal.  

For Villarreal, Buchanan has contributed six goals and two assists across 36 appearances in 2025 so far. He scored a hat-trick in a 5:0 win over Girona in the second matchweek of the 2025/26 La Liga season and appeared in four Champions League matches for the club in 2025 so far. 

Jonathan David 

For Canada, J. David appeared in all 14 matches, contributing six goals and two assists. In 2025, J. David entered CANMNT’s Top 10 All-Time appearances leaders, currently sitting at 73, five off Mark Watson’s 78 appearances for country. He was named the 2024/25 Concacaf Men’s Player of the Year at November’s Concacaf Awards. 

For LOSC Lille, J. David contributed eight goals and seven assists in 2025 before announcing his departure in May. He departed the club as its third all-time goalscorer and all-time goalscoring leader in European competitions. In July, J. David joined Italian giants Juventus on a free transfer, scoring on his debut in a 2:0 win over Parma in the club’s opening Serie A match of the 2025/26 season.  

Promise David 

For Canada, P. David appeared in eight matches, contributing four goals, including a goal on his debut in a 4:2 win over Ukraine. He averaged a goal every 51 minutes in his debut year for Canada.  

For Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, P. David won the 2024/25 Belgium First Division A, the club’s first league title since 1935. He finished as the club’s top goalscorer with 19 goals in 34 appearances, earning the club its first-ever UEFA Champions League berth. He scored the first UEFA Champions League goal of the 2025/26 campaign in a 3:1 win over PSV Eindhoven. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise currently leads the 2025/26 Belgium First Division A and currently sits 25th in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League table. 

Richie Laryea 

For Canada, Laryea appeared in 11 matches, contributing one assist. Laryea played every minute in Canada’s final eight matches of 2025, showing his versatility in the fullback positions. He earned his 70th appearance for Canada in a 0:0 draw against Ecuador at BMO Field in Toronto. 

For Toronto FC, Laryea appeared in 17 MLS matches across 2025, contributing a goal and an assist. He broke into Toronto FC’s Top 10 all-time appearance leaders with 146, just six shy of Eriq Zavaleta in 9th place. He was named a finalist for the 2025 MLS Comeback Player of the Year. 

Tani Oluwaseyi 

For Canada, Oluwaseyi appeared in 12 matches, contributing two goals and two assists. He scored the opening goal of the Concacaf Nations League Third-Place match in a 2:1 win over USA.  

For Minnesota United, Oluwaseyi appeared in 29 matches across all competitions, contributing 12 goals and seven assists. He remains Minnesota’s joint-top MLS goalscorer despite leaving the club in August. He became Minnesota United’s club record sale, joining Spain’s Villarreal CF, contributing six goals and an assist in his 19 appearances in all competitions so far. He scored a hat-trick in his Copa Del Rey debut in a 6:0 win over Ciudad Lucena. 

Niko Sigur 

For Canada, Sigur appeared in 13 matches, contributing two goals and two assists. He scored the opening goal of the Concacaf Gold Cup group stage for Canada on his return to his hometown province of British Columbia in a 6:0 win over Honduras. 

For Hadjuk Split, Sigur has appeared in 20 matches across all competitions in 2025 so far, contributing a goal and an assist. In 2025, he showcased his versatility, playing at multiple positions, including right-back, central midfield, and right midfield. Hajduk Split currently sits second in Croatia’s HNL league table. 

Dayne St. Clair

For Canada, St. Clair appeared in nine matches, contributing five clean sheets. St. Clair posted clean sheets against top opponents such as Colombia (FIFA Rank #13), Ecuador (FIFA Rank #23), Wales (FIFA Rank #32), Côte D’Ivoire (#42), and Honduras (FIFA Rank #64). 

For Minnesota United, St. Clair appeared in 39 matches across all competitions. He was named the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year after recording a league-best 77.93 save percentage and setting single-season career highs in saves (113) and shutouts (10) throughout the 2025 MLS regular season. He led his team to a Western Conference semi-final appearance after scoring the winning penalty in a penalty shootout win over Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference quarter-final third leg.
