Canada's men's national team won 1:0 in the opening match of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada defeated Jamaica on an Ali Gerba goal in the 75th minute of the tournament opener at The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, CA. Gerba was named Miller Man of the Match while goalkeeper Greg Sutton posted the clean sheet.
In the first half, Canada's first chance came in the seventh minute shortly after a Canadian free kick. On an attempted Jamaican clearing, the ball bounced off the referee to the Canadian side at the top of the box. The ball was quickly played into Gerba, but the Jamaican defence got back in time to knock the ball away from Gerba.
Jamaica followed up with a couple of chances of its own, a shot saved by Sutton and a shot just wide of the Canadian post. In the 25th minute, Canada returned with another good play on goal. Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made a terrific save.
In the 34th minute, Bernier fired a shot just wide of the right post following some Canadian momentum in midfield. It was de Guzman who made the final touch to Bernier on the left side; rushing down the right side, Will Johnson couldn't quite catch the shot before it ran beyond the post.
In the second half, substitute Josh Simpson fired the first shot on goal in the 46th minute. His shot was nicely saved by Ricketts. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball was semi cleared to the top of the box before Kevin McKenna chased the ball back; he quickly turned, but fired the ball above the crossbar.
Jamaica came back with some good chances and successive corner kicks. In the 55th minute, some quick passing teed up Damian Stewart for a good shot on the net; goalkeeper Greg Sutton, however, was up to the task. In the 64th minute, Tyrone Marshall headed the ball forward to Ricardo Fuller who found himself on a good run with Canada's McKenna half a step back. Greg Sutton made a first good save on Fuller and then jumped up to catch the rebound.
In the 75th minute, Canada finally found the mark after Mike Klukowski crossed in a terrific ball from the left side to Gerba on the right. Rather than control and shoot, Gerba volleyed the shot back into the left side of the net.
For Gerba, it was his 14th career goal and fourth in his last three international matches. It was also his fifth goal in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, tying the Canadian all-time record held by Carlo Corazzin.
