Match Report

Canada fell 2:4 to USA this afternoon in the second match of the 2009 CONCACAF Men's Under-17 Championship. Down after just two minutes after a questionable penalty call, Canada couldn't catch its opponent before full time.

Canada thought it was off to a quick start, but then conceded an early corner kick in just the second minute. It was off the kick that Canada was handicapped by a questionable call after an American attacker jumped and fell to the ground. The referee placed the ball on the penalty mark and goalscorer McInerney put the ball in the back of the net for a one-goal lead.

Canada regained possession and started to build its play. In the 17th minute, American captain Perry Kitchen became the first player booked by the referee. Just 12 minutes later, however, Canada found itself down 0-2 after McInerney scored his second goal of the match. Canada gave him too much space in the midfield and the forward fired it home from 35 yards out.

USA nearly added to its lead a couple of minutes later, but Canadian goalkeeper Richard Causton made an excellent leg save in between a pair of American corner kicks.

In the 38th minute, Canada failed to clear the ball down the right side and the ball soon found its way into the Canadian box. The Canadian defence tried to clear the ball out the centre of the box, but the American attackers intercepted and made three volleys and then a header into the back of the goal.

Not much changed for Canada in the first part of the second half. Less than a minute after making its first substitution, however, Canada caught a break and scored its first goal of the game. Jaineil Hoilett turned with the ball in the box and fired a low shot underneath the American goalkeeper.

The goal brought some life to the Canadian offence. The Americans, however, did not sit back. Over the next 12 minutes, McInerney had three good chances to complete his hat trick, but he was stopped every time. In the 75th minute in between a pair of corner kicks, Causton made a terrific diving save off a header. Five minutes later, midfielder Brennan McNicoll caught McInerney who was off on a short breakaway. Two minutes thereafter, Causton made another diving save off another header from within the box.

In the 84th minute, Canada went down by three goals again despite seeming to clear the ball off the line. Shortly after USA was booked for delay of game (it failed to take a quick free kick), a bouncing ball was kneed off the short post by the Canadian defender, hit the cross bar, and was then cleared. There was some confusion in the crowd, but the referee called the goal with the help of his assistant referee who was standing on the line.

Shortly after the whistle, Canada came storming back and scored its second goal to cut the lead in half. Off a Causton long kick, an American defender accidentally headed the ball forward before a pursuing Coulton Jackson who fired it into the net.

Despite the late offence, Canada was unable to get two more back in the team's first loss of the competition. Canada, whose title sponsor is BMO, now looks ahead to Saturday when it faces Cuba in the third match of the preliminary round.
