Match Report

Samuel Charron scored both goals in a Canada 2:0 victory over Australia at the Tri-Nation Invitational Challenge in Chula Vista, CA, USA. Man of the match Charron scored in each half, the 35th and 36th international goals of his career.

It was the first of back-to-back international matches on Friday and Saturday night in Chula Vista. Following Canada’s 2018 international opener on 20 July, they face tournament hosts USA on 21 July.

Charron scored his first goal of the 2018 international season on a pass from Gaerrisen Freeland. After a bit of build up, Freeland fought the ball loose from an opponent and Charron followed through with the left-footed blast for the 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

Charron scored again on a penalty in the 41st minute. Charron had been taken down on the run after taking a pass from debutant Corey Stashewsky. Charron then scored with his left-footed shot.

Goalkeeper Damien Wojtiw posted the clean sheet, the sixth of his international career.

Canada’s starting lineup featured Damien Wojtiw in goal, Vito Proietti at right back, Nicholas Heffernan at left back, Duncan McDonald, Samuel Charron and Corey Stashewsky in the midfield, and Gaerrisen Freeland up front. In the second half, coach Drew Ferguson replaced Freeland with Lucas Bruno (38’) and Stashewsky with Diego Gilbert (53’). Both Stashewsky and Gilbert were making their international debuts.
