Canada came from behind to win 2:1 over CONCACAF rivals Curaçao in a Men's International Friendly match at Stade Saputo in Montréal. Manjrekar James and Anthony Jackson-Hamel were the goalscorers in the win.
With Octavio Zambrano making his Canada coaching debut, Canada featured four debutants in Raheem Edwards, Alphonso Davies, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Juan Cordova. Patrice Bernier, meanwhile, wore the captain's armband in what is expected to be his last international match in his hometown of Montréal. Bernier received a standing ovation when he left the game in the 79th minute.
FIRST HALF:
Curaçao tested Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan in the ninth minute. It was a constant search for big man Rangelo Janga, but Borjan got to this one confidently.
Five minutes later, Raheem Edwards did well to get back after he coughed up the ball near the halfway line. He got back, extended himself to get a sliding touch on a Jeremy de Nooijer shot, thus allowing Borjan to collect it easily.
In the 20th minute, Borjan collected another cross and quickly turned it up field to Cyle Larin. With the defender tugging on him, Larin took Canada’s first shot on target, but it was a routine stop for goalkeeper Eloy Room.
Moments later, Manjrekar James dangerously deflected a Curaçao throw in in front of his own goal. Jarchinio Antonia fired it just wide of the goal and Canada were breathing safely.
Will Johnson then turned things up after he stole the ball from Darryl Lachman deep in Curaçao's territory. He quickly crossed it in to Junior Hoilett who touched it once, but couldn’t get a second touch as Curaçao defender Cuco Martina cleared it from danger.
Johnson then got a pair of shots off in the 34th and 36th minute, but neither difficult for Room.
Canada continued their pressure forward as Fraser Aird joined the attack. He created a one-two with Larin, but Quentin Jakoba deflected the cross away with a header. On the ensuing corner kick, Johnson's cross was headed wide by Samuel Piette.
Curaçao then struck first in the 43rd minute. Gevaro Nepomuceno from the left side rolled the ball into in the middle of the box to Rangelo Janga who drove it home left footed past Milan Borjan.
Canada got one right back in the 45th minute. From a Will Johnson free kick, Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room couldn’t hold the ball. James was Johnny on the spot and side volleyed the ball into the open net.
SECOND HALF:
In the 52nd minute, Curaçao's half-time substitutes nearly combined to put the visitors back in the lead. Gino van Kessel sent a low cross that was intercepted by goalkeeper Borjan.
Two minutes later Canada captain Patrice Bernier sent in Hoilett on the edge of the box and he found Larin wide open in front of the net. From inside the six yard box, however, Larin's left-footed shot was wide of the target.
A few minutes later, a fortunate bounce off the defender landed right in front of Anthony Jackson-Hamel who reacted quickly and ripped one at goal to force the best save of the night by Room.
In the 68th minute Hoilett made a nifty move to get in on goal. It was a difficult angle and he drove his shot wide into the side netting.
In the 72nd minute, Russell Teibert was in behind the Curaçao defense and deflected home a Jackson-Hamel shot after an excellent right-footed cross from Hoilett. Teibert was in an offside position.
The entry of Jackson-Hamel and Davies sparked Canada offensively. Davies side kicked a Marcel de Jong cross, but it was right at the goalkeeper. They created another scoring opportunity after Jackson-Hamel fed it up to Teibert who played in a charging Davies. Davies blasted it on goal, but Room made the save.
Against the run of play, van Kessel created a chance with a cross, it was palmed away by Borjan. The ball fell into the box and Curaçao got off a half shot that Dejan Jakovic cleared from danger.
In the 86th minute, all of Alphonso Davies offensive pressure earned a penalty after he got clipped by Shanon Carmelia. Junior Hoilett stepped up to the penalty spot, shot it low but was denied by the woodwork. Curaçao cleared for a Canadian throw in.
Canada took it quickly, Teibert fired it at goal, and Curaçao cleared it but not out of danger. Samuel Piette got the ball to Jackson-Hamel who fired it from long range, low into the corner to give Canada its first lead of the match.
