Match Report

Canada put in a terrific team performance to beat France 1:0 at the Rio 2016 Olympic Quarterfinals in São Paulo, Brazil. Sophie Schmdit scored the only goal of the game from a Janine Beckie cross in the second half of the 12 August match. The win extended Canada's perfect record at the Rio 2016 Women's Olympic Football Tournament, with next up a Semifinals date with European champions Germany.

The goal was Schmidt's 17th of her career and first at the Olympic Games. Beckie, meanwhile, leads the team with three goals and one assist in Brazil.

FIRST HALF:

The game started a little cagey, but Christine Sinclair had a chance to open the scoring in the third minute after Allysha Chapman played a smart cut back to the advancing captain. Her first time shot was just wide of the left post.

The game was scruffy for the first 20 minutes or so, with France seeing more of the ball but not being able to produce any good chances. Canada played defensively tight, happy to make the French play on the periphery of the danger areas. Allysha Chapman was heavily involved, showing great tenacity in not giving up any space on her flank.

Canada had a flurry of activity in the 23rd minute, with good pressure and a deft touch from Diana Matheson getting Sinclair facing upfield with space to play in. Her through ball out wide was received well by Janine Beckie whose squared pass was cut out by the French defence. It was only cleared as far as Sophie Schmidt and the long range effort was on target, but stopped and cleared by Wendie Renard, the French captain.

France threatened the Canadian goal in the 29th minute. There was a free-kick from left touchline that was floated across the six yard box by Camille Abily. Griedge Mbock Bathy got her head on the ball, but the contact wasn't significant enough to get the shot on target and the ball bounced out for a goal kick.

Canada won a corner in the 33rd minute and Beckie fired it in low looking for Sinclair. It was cleared by Amandine Henry for another corner, again taken by Beckie. This time she swung it in towards the near post where it could have crept into the net if not for the intervention of Renard on the line.

Josée Bélanger was brought on for the injured Allysha Chapman just before half time. She was immediately involved, clearing away a free kick into added time. France then came within inches of taking the lead with the last touch of the half, with Renard's header from a corner just sliding wide of the left post. The first half ended 0-0 with neither team able to get hold of the game.

SECOND HALF:

The second half started as the first ended, with neither team making an impression in the early exchanges until Kadeisha Buchanan was shown a yellow card in the 50th minute. The free kick was swing towards the back post but was high and wide.

Sophie Schmidt opened the scoring in the 56th after great team play. Shelina Zadorsky played a diagonal ball from the centre of the field to the right flank towards Beckie. The forward's first touch was to loop the ball over the advancing full back Sakina Karchaoui, her second was to bring it inside another defender, and her third was a cross towards the back post. Schmidt was completely unmarked and was able to finish the tricky chance with great aplomb, putting Canada into a 1-0 lead.

Schmidt was involved again in the 58th minute, this time picking up a yellow card for a late slide tackle. The French free kick was sent into the penalty area quite straight, with Sinclair was the first player to it. Sinclair's header knocking the ball onto her own crossbar where it bounced clear.

The game then settled into a familiar pattern, with France attempting to play into the middle of the field in front of the goal more. Desiree Scott demonstrated her ability to read the play and time her challenges as broke up move after move.

France had a golden opportunity to level in the 72nd minute. A corner looked to have been dealt with, but the clearance wasn't ideal and ended up with Abily on the edge of the eighteen yard box. She had time and space, but her shot was weak, and Stephanie Labbé was able to stop and hold on to it without any problem.

France looked to set up substitute Louis Cadamuro in the 76th minute, playing a free kick to the substitute at the top of the box. Her shot was struck well, but wide of the left upright.

Josée Bélanger was shown a yellow card in the 83rd minute for a foul on the left flank. This booking means she will be suspended for the Semifinals.

Labbé had been strong all game, demonstrating her qualities in the 84th minute, first confidently punching away a free-kick and then making sure of grabbing the ball that was send back into the area after an awkward bounce. The French team started showing some frustration and Amandine Henry was booked in the 85th minute for lunging in on Janine Beckie.

The remaining time was spent repelling waves of French attacks, as the defence stood strong, Labbe continuing to work well with her centre back pairing as they played to the 1-0 win.
