Match Report

Canada’s Women’s National Team rounded out the group stage of the Cyprus Women’s Cup with a 1:0 win over Italy.

The goal for Canada came in the 50th minute when fullback Allysha Chapman found a pass from Melissa Tancredi and buried it past the Italian goalkeeper.

Canada struggled in the first few minutes of the match, adapting to Italy’s diamond formation.  As space opened up in Italy’s half, Canada made several drives toward the net, but a sharp Italian goalkeeper ensured the teams went into half time with an untouched scoreboard.

Canada’s Head Coach John Herdman made formation changes at the half to deal with Italy’s style of play, and the tactic proved fruitful early in the second half with Chapman finding the back of the net.

Canada’s third match of the Cyprus Women’s Cup deviated from the system the team had been playing for the first two matches.  Herdman changed up the starting XI, starting Stephanie Labbé in goal, defenders Rhian Wilkinson, Kadeisha Buchannan, Carmelina Moscato, and Allysha Chapman, midfielders Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt and Christine Sinclair, with Josée Bélanger, Adriana Leon and Jonelle Filigno up front.

Canada made six substitutions during the match.  At halftime Melissa Tancredi came in for Adrianna Leon, Emily Zurrer for Carmelina Moscato, and Ashley Lawrence for Jonelle Filigno. The second substitution came at the 70th, with Janine Beckie replacing Josée Bélanger.  The final substitution saw Robin Gayle substitute Rhian Wilkinson and Christina Julien for Christine Sinclair in the 78th minute.

Italy’s starting XI were Laura Giuliani (GK), Raffaella Manieri, Sara Gama (c ), Federica Di Criscio, Valentina Cernoia, Martina Rosucci, Linda Tucceri Cimini, Marta Carissimi, Tatiana Bonetti, Ilaria Mauro,  and Stefania Tarenzi.
