Match Report

Canada’s Women’s National Team edged out Korea Republic 1:0 in their second group stage match of the Cyprus Women’s Cup on Friday 6 March 2015 in Larnaca, Cyprus.

After a scoreless first half, Canada’s Captain Christine Sinclair put one past the Korean keeper in the opening minute of the second half (46’), scoring her second of the tournament.

Sinclair’s goal came after Korea Republic opened the second half and quickly lost the ball to Josée Bélanger who brought it up to the opposing team’s 18-yard box, only to be hauled down by two Korean players.  Bélanger’s actions pulled the defenders out of position and Sinclair was able to slip in behind them to find herself face to face with the Korean keeper with the ball on her foot.  A quick touch was all Sinclair needed to gain control before squaring up and putting it over the Korean keeper’s left shoulder.

The referees were clearly put to the test as the play stopped and started continuously throughout the 90 minutes. In a match that saw the Korean squad do everything they could to disrupt the rhythm, five yellow card infractions were handed out to each side, and both had a player sent off for accumulation of cautions.

Canada’s Jessie Fleming was sent of in the 66th minute after receiving her second unsporting behaviour infraction of the match (43’and 66’). Korea Republic’s Young Ju Lee was sent off for delaying the start of a play (58’) and unsporting behavior (69’).

Head Coach John Herdman kept the opening XI from Canada’s first match of the competition, starting Erin McLeod in goal, defenders Rhian Wilkinson, Kadeisha Buchannan, Carmelina Moscato, and Allysha Chapman, midfielders Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt and Jessie Fleming, with Josée Bélanger, Melissa Tancredi and Captain Christine Sinclair up front.

Canada made three substitutions during the match.  Rebecca Quinn came in for Carmelina Moscato on the back line in the 64th minute, Adriana Leon came in for Josée Bélanger up front in the 73rd minute, and another striker, Janelle Filigno, replaced Melissa Tancredi in the 79th minute.
