Match Report

Canada launched its Cyprus Women’s Cup bid with a 2-0 win over Scotland in Nicosia.

The pivotal moment came early, in the third minute, when a superb cross from Christine Sinclair found Jessie Fleming as she slid past the Scottish defence to find the back of the net. In a moment that perfectly captures Head Coach John Herdman’s vision for this team, Canada’s captain seemed to use a sixth sense to find the 16 year old rookie as drove to the net, assisting Fleming in her first goal as a member of the Women’s National Team.

Sinclair followed her early assist with a goal in the 55th minute on a pass from Rhian Wilkinson.

Canada held on to the 2-0 lead, controlling the play and keeping the ball in the in Scotland’s end for much of the game.

For Sinclair, it was international goal number 152.

Canada’s win in their first match of the Cyprus Women’s Cup continues their unbeaten streak to seven.

Canada's starting XI featured Erin McLeod (GK), Rhian Wilkinson, Kadeisha Buchannan, Carmelina Moscato, and Allysha Chapman at back, at midfield were Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt, and Jessie Fleming, and Josée Bélanger, Melissa Tancredi and Christine Sinclair played up front.

There were not substitutions in the first half.

In the second half, Emily Zurrer came in for Carmelina Moscato (60’). Coach John Herdman then made a change replacing Jessie Fleming with Ashley Lawrence, Melissa Tancredi with Jonelle Filingo, and Josée Bélanger with Adriana Leon (70’). The final substitution was late in the match when Christina Julien replaced Christine Sinclair (84’).
