Match Report

Surrounded by a hostile crowd of Yellow and Green, Canada took on Jamaica in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship. The winner would not only advance to the final but also qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2014.

The match was played on a hot, slick evening in Catherine Hall Stadium. Despite muggy weather thousands of hometown supporters showed-up hoping that the Junior Reggae Girlz could upset the Canucks. After all, only a few hours before, Mexico had defeated tournament favourites USA on this very pitch.

Canada, however, came out firing. Taking the lead within four minutes when Marie-Mychèle Métivier’s shot was deflected by a defender on it’s way towards net. This was Métivier sixth goal of the tournament, making her Canada’s as well as the tournament’s leading scorer.

The goal followed a series of corner kicks. The third of which was only partially cleared by Jamaica, creating a scramble inside of the 18-yard box, which fell to Métivier who pounced on the loose ball.

Canada would strike again in the 27th minute, when Emily Borgmann, collected a pass from fellow attacker Marie Levasseur that evaded Jamaica’s keeper, Shanay Ricketts, and guided it across the line.

Three minutes later, Captain Jessie Fleming would make it 3-0, firing a rocket off of the crossbar and into the back of the net from outside of the 18-yard box.

While there was plenty of offense, Canada’s backline of Simmrin Dhaliwal, Easther Mayi Kith, Bianca St-Georges and Rachel Jones deserve credit for supporting the midfield and helping to generate the attack. Mayi Kith, who replaced the injured Mika Richards, was especially impressive making several key tackles.

Although there were fewer goals in the second-half, Canada remained dominant following the re-start. In fact, the Canucks appeared more composed, while their opponents seemed tired.

What followed was a plethora of chances, leaving Canada with 25 shots on goal after 90 minutes, compared to six for Jamaica. While Ricketts deserves credit for the saves, Canada was unlucky to hit the post and miss clear opportunities.

However, the Canucks would add to their lead in the 48th minute. The goal by Midfielder Sarah Kinzner was her first of the tournament. Racing towards goal to track down a looping pass by Fleming, Kinzner out-hustled her defender, stretching for the ball and deflecting it past the on-rushing Ricketts.

The final goal of the match would come courtesy of Levasseur. Throughout the match the striker was finding space, but her shots were directed straight at Rickets. But in the 70th minute she would be rewarded, beating the keeper, with a long-shot to seal the 5:0 victory.
