Match Report

Canada fell 1:2 to Korea DPR in the quarter-final phase of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Azerbaijan 2012. With all three goals scored in the final quarter hour of the elimination match, Canada conceded twice before pulling one back in the first minute of added time.

Unfortunately, less than three minutes remained after Nichelle Prince scored Canada's lone goal: time then quickly ran out on the team's dreams of a podium finish at Azerbaijan 2012.

In the 4 October match at 8KM Stadium in Baku, Korea DPR's Ri Un Sim scored in the 78th and 87th minutes, the second of which was scored after Canada had changed formation in an attempt to pull back an equaliser. Canada ultimately got its goal in the 91st minute, but the Prince marker could do no more than cut the Korean lead in half.

Both sides had chances in the first half, but neither side could take the lead. Just before the half-hour mark, Canada had a chance after Rebecca Quinn headed an opportunity from Summer Clarke, but the chance went straight into goalkeeper Rim Yong Hwa's hands.

In the second half, Canada had an even better chance after Nichelle Prince put Summer Clarke through with a defence-breaking pass. Clarke hit her shot on target, but Rim Young Hwa saved it, tipping the ball off and over the crossbar in the 61st minute.

Ri Un Sim finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Teammate Ri Hyan Sim drove down the right side before crossing a pass into the six-yard box. Ri Un Sim, firmly planted on the ground in between two Canadian defenders, headed the ball into the net.

Just under 10 minutes later with the Canadians pressing for an equaliser, Ri Un Sim scored her second goal with her foot. This time, Kim Phyong Hwa drove into the left before crossing a pass back across the ground. The ball skipped over to Ri Un Sim, who took a moment and then fired the ball into the far right corner of the net.

Down by two goals, Canada did not stop pressing for a goal. Moments before the second Ri Un Sim goal, Amandine Pierre-Louis fired a hard shot down the right side that was almost too hot to handle for Rim Young Hwa. Then in the 91st minute, Prince's shot was indeed too much, as the shot from beyond the penalty area tipped off Rim Young Hwa's gloves and into the goal.

For her effort throughout the match - as well as the goal - Prince was selected Canada's player of the match. Attendance for the 4 October match was 6,852.
