Match Report

Canada extended its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 2:0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in a Men’s International Friendly at the Central Broward Regional Stadium in Lauderhill, FL, USA on Wednesday 15 August 2012.

Tosaint Ricketts gave Canada the 1-0 lead after he fired home a cross from Marcel de Jong in the 58th minute. Will Johnson doubled Canada’s advantage from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.

After a largely uneventful opening half-hour, it was Ricketts who has the first clear-cut chance of the match when he blazed past a pair of Trinidadian defenders down the right flank before unleashing a drive which smashed off the upright. Lester Peltier had Trinidad and Tobago’s best effort of the first half after he provided an impressive run down the right side before sending his effort wide of Lars Hirschfeld’s far post.

The second half was an improved period for Canada as Stephen Hart’s side asserted firm control of the game with long stints of possession.

The good play was eventually rewarded when substitute Pedro Pacheco sent de Jong surging down the left wing. De Jong crossed it to Ricketts at the back post before, after taking a moment to steady himself, Ricketts dispatched a powerful effort to the top right corner past the diving Jan-Michael Williams in goal for Trinidad and Tobago.

The goal in the 58th minute was the fourth of Ricketts’ international career.

Canada came close twice more shortly after through a pair of chances from Russell Teibert who was making his international debut for Canada. Teibert was first clear through on goal but blazed his effort over the bar. Only minutes later, Teibert was put worked into a good position by Pacheco – but Teibert hit his effort just wide of the far post.

Canada eventually got their assurance goal from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded by referee Jair Marrufo after Johnson's cross was handled in the box by a Trinidad and Tobago defender. Johnson himself stepped up to the spot and buried his effort past Williams in goal in the 86th minute. Goalkeeper Williams did well to extend himself – and made contact with the ball – but it was not enough to keep out Johnson’s firm effort. For Johnson, it was the second goal of his international career.

The final whistle was blown only minutes later to cap off a relatively comfortable win for Canada.

Canada’s starting XI featured Lars Hirschfeld in goal, André Hainault at right back, Dejan Jakovic and Doneil Henry at centre back, Ante Jazic at left back, and Nik Ledgerwood, Julian de Guzman, Terry Dunfield, Will Johnson, Tosaint Ricketts and Patrice Bernier from the midfield up through to the attack.

In the second half, coach Stephen Hart replaced Hirschfeld with Milan Borjan (46’), Henry and Jazic with Marcel de Jong and Pedro Pacheco (46’), Bernier with Russell Teibert (62’), Dunfield with Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault (77’), and Dunfield with Lucas Cavallini (77’).

Trinidad and Tobago’s starting XI featured Jan-Michael Williams (goal), Seon Power, Joevin Jones, Carlyle Mitchell, Curtis Gonzales, Lester Peltier, Keon Daniel, Clyde Leon, Kevin Molino, Devorn Jorsling and Richard Roy.

In the second half, coach Hutson Charles replaced Peltier with Darryl Roberts (46’), Jorsling with Daniel Cyrus (53’), Mitchell with Rodell Elock (70’), and Power with Kareem Moses (77’). In the second half, Mitchell was shown a yellow card.

The 15 August 2012 match was played at Central Broward Regional Stadium. Attendance for the match was 200. Of note, Ante Jazic started the match with the captain's armband for the second time in his career. As for goalkeepers Hirschfeld and Borjan, they both posted a clean sheet in their 45-minute appearances for Canada. Henry, Teibert and Cavallini, meanwhile, all made their international debut.

As for Canadian head coach Stephen Hart, this marked his first international "A" match against Trinidad and Tobago, the international side he once represented as a player. With the win, Hart's international coaching record improves to 18 wins, 10 draws and 13 losses in 41 matches. In six matches in the state of Florida, he has four wins, one draw and one loss.
