Match Report

Canada lost 1:2 to Germany tonight in its third and final match at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008. The loss ultimately eliminated Canada from the competition as the team finished third in Group C behind Japan and Germany. Only the top-two teams in the group advanced to the quarter-final stage.

Lisa Schwab scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, thus breaking the hearts of the young Canucks. A draw would not have been enough for Canada at the Estadio Francisco Sanchez Rumoroso in Coquimbo. Unfortunately, Canada just couldn't find that winner.

It wasn't until the 77th minute that Bianca Schmidt opened the scoring on a header from inside the box. The goal was a redirection from a corner kick on the right side. Canada's Allysha Chapman did her best to keep the ball off the line, but the ball deflected off goalkeeper Erin McNulty's back and bounced into the goal.

Germany had created numerous chances before its eventual opening goal. Of note just four minutes earlier, a German volley hit the post and fell near the line. The referee, however, was in position to call it off.

Just four minutes after the German goal, however, the Canucks struck back and capitalized on a defensive mistake. Isabel Kerschowski missed a clearing inside the box after Canada's Anoop Josan centered the ball from the right side. Monica Lam-Feist was in perfect position to hammer home the shot, leaving German goalkeeper Alisa Vetterlein with no chance.

The German substitute Schwab, however, ended the Canadian dreams just nine minutes later. Nadine Kessler created the chance when she centered the ball into the Canadian box. The ball deflected off Lexi Marton right to Schwab; Schwab made no mistake and gave McNulty no chance on the shot.

Canada managed seven shots in the match, two of which were on target. Germany, meanwhile, fired 26 shots, 11 of which were on target. McNulty made numerous stops throughout the match. Of particular note was her stop on Nathalie Bock in the 54th minute. Following a series of quick passes with Nicole Banecki, Bock fired from point blank, but McNulty made the initial stop and covered the rebound.

Coach Ian Bridge used the exact same starting lineup as he had four days earlier against Congo DR. Alyssa Lagonia, Julie Armstrong and Rachael Goulding were Bridge's three substitutions in the second half.

The loss was Canada's third of the season as it finished 2008 with a record of nine wins, two draws and three losses. Canada recorded one win and two losses at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008. It was the second-straight FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup that Canada failed to escape the group phase. Its best-ever finish was second place at Canada 2002.
