Canada's women's national team is in first place in Group A after day one at the 2008 Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, Republic of Korea. Canada won its opening match 5:0 over Argentina while Korea Republic won 2:1 over New Zealand. The two top teams - Canada and Korea Republic - will now face each other on 16 June at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. The local kickoff time is 14.00.

Says coach Even Pellerud, "Korea might be our strongest opponent based on its recent performance at the women's Asian Cup in Vietnam two weeks ago."

In Canada's first game on Saturday, Diana Matheson opened the scoring with her fourth career goal with the senior team. Captain Sinclair then scored her Association-leading 87th and 88th goals while Melissa Tancredi scored her seventh career goal. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod posted the clean sheet.

On Saturday, Canada also got a monkey off its back when Brittany Timko scored her first international goal at the senior level. Argentina may have thought it was weird to see Canada celebrate so much after its fifth goal, but it marked Timko's first senior goal in 79 matches. Timko, adidas Golden Shoe winner from the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Thailand 2004, has been a versatile player with Canada at numerous positions since earning her promotion to the senior squad.

Canada has an all-time record of two wins, no draws and no losses against Korea Republic's senior team. After Korea Republic, Canada faces New Zealand on 18 June. Should Canada finish first in Group A, it will play the winner of Group B in the Peace Queen Cup final on 21 June. Brazil and the United States are currently one-two in Group B standings.
