With one point after two matches, Canada's men's U-23 team faces a must-win situation in its Sunday 16 March match against Guatemala. Canada hopes to finish second in Group B of the CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament so it can advance to the 20 March semi-final in Nashville, TN.
After a 1:1 draw with Mexico, Canada lost 1:2 to Haiti on Friday 14 March. Should Canada defeat Guatemala on the final round-robin day, the team will finish with four points. To finish in second place, Canada will also need to hope that either Mexico wins (with fewer goals scored than Canada on the final day) or that Haiti draws (also with fewer goals than Canada).
After two matches, Guatemala has six points (with three goals), Haiti has three points (two goals), Canada has one point (two goals), and Mexico has one point (two goals). Three points are awarded for a win and one point is awarded for a draw. Should two teams be tied in points, goal differential, goals scored and in their head-to-head match up, then a playoff will determine which team advances.
Guatemala is the lone team in Group B which have guaranteed a spot in one of the two semi-finals on 20 March. Guatemala last qualified for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament in 1968. Its group of players born 1985 or later have not competed in any FIFA tournaments.
Canada last competed in the Men's Olympic Football Tournament at Los Angeles 1984. They also took part in Montréal 1976 (as tournament hosts) and were Olympic Champions at St. Louis 1904. For Canadian players born 1985 or later, they have competed in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Nederland 1985 (1985s) and FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 (1987s).
