Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Women's Under-19 Team today defeated Costa Rica 4-0 in front of 2,354 spectators in the semi-final match of the CONCACAF Women's U-19 Qualifiers in Montreal, Quebec. The win sends Canada to the final at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6th at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa, and the 2004 FIFA World Championships in Thailand set for November.
In the earlier semi-final match played in Montreal, the United States defeated Mexico 6-0 to earn the other CONCACAF place in the World Championships.
Canada came out strong after the opening whistle as Brittany Timko was able to send a shot to the Costa Rican net in the first minute of play. Two minutes later, Timko again was able to send another shot to the net. Katie Thorlakson was called offside in the eighth minute after beating a defender and the Costa Rican goalkeeper Yirlania Fonseca for a shot into the net.
The rout began in the 24th minute when Veronique Maranda received a Thorlakson through ball to the box where she finished with a clean shot to the back of the net.
Canada's second came when Timko capitalized on a pass from Amanda Cicchini in the 27th minute.
Ten minutes later, Emily Zurrer scored her third of the tournament when she connected for a header on a Maranda corner.
The final goal was called as an own goal by Costa Rican defender Karla Duran after Sari Raber came up the right side and crossed the ball through Fonseca's hands for Duran to tap it into the net.
Canadian goalkeeper Stacey VanBoxmeer earned her fourth shout-out of the tournament. Canada is the only team at the tournament with no goals against.
“An exciting and important win for us tonight that qualifies us for Thailand,” said Head Coach Ian Bridge. “We've continued to improve with each game. I hope to take one more step in the final against USA.”
