Match Report

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National team lost against Uruguay 2:0 in its second friendly of the international break. In a match where Canada created many chances, the team played well while their performance was not reflective of the scoreline.

After a well-deserved win against Qatar on Sept. 23, Uruguay was Canada’s toughest competition of the international break. The South American side finished third place in the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol group of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ where only Brazil and Argentina finished ahead of them.

Despite the tougher competition, Canada didn’t stray from their tactics and looked dangerous in and out of possession. The team often passed their way out of Uruguay’s press and into Uruguay’s half. This created chances for forwards Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David to run at, and often beat, Uruguayan defenders.

Cyle Larin and David came close to scoring but had their shots blocked and saved respectively.

Team Captain and goalkeeper Milan Borjan made his 67th appearance for Canada, tying for second on the all-time appearance list. Borjan was called into action several times on the night, often rushing out of his goal to clear through-balls that slipped through Canada’s backline.

Uruguay got on the scoresheet when Nicolas de la Cruz hit a right-footed freekick that sailed over the wall and into the back of the net. The Uruguayans then doubled their lead when Darwin Nunez scored a header from a Luis Suarez cross.

Canada put more pressure on Uruguay in the second half, where most of the game was played on Uruguay’s end of the pitch. Canada waited for their attacking opportunities and patiently maintained. Unfortunately, Canada couldn’t put their chances away. David had a curling strike tipped wide of the post and Kamal Miller just missed the net with a header off of a corner kick.

The team will take the experience gained from the international break as they prepare for the World Cup in Qatar in November.
