Match Report

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team kicked off their CONCACAF Nations League campaign in the group stage with a 4:0 victory against Curaçao at home in BC Place. The Canadian men dominated most of the match giving their opponents only a couple of scoring chances.

In the 2’ Tajon Buchanan ran the ball down the wing and crossed it to Larin for a header but the first chance of the night went just wide.

In the opening 10 minutes, Canada has dominated the possession with Tajon and Alphonso Davies making the Curaçao defenders work along the wings.

In the 14’ Cyle Larin made a quick turn up the middle to create space and got off a shot, but it was saved by the Curaçao goalkeeper.

In the 21’ Davies created space with his speed in the middle and fired off a shot, but it was deflected wide for a corner kick.

Alphonso Davies is rewarded with a penalty shot in the 26’ after getting pushed inside the box and opens the scoring for the Canadians in front of an electric home crowd to make it 1:0. Davies shot was off his left foot and into the bottom left corner of the net.

Canada scored again before the half in the 41’ with Jonathan David receiving the ball inside the box from a goalkeeper deflection and cut a short cross to Steven Vitória who headed it through traffic and into the goal. Canada strong movement and persistent attacks gave Curaçao few chances to make a play with the ball in the first half.

Curaçao had the first chance in the second half and their first chance of the game for a goal in the 57’ but the shot was blocked inside the box by Alistair Johnston to maintain the two-goal lead.

Alphonso Davies scored his second goal in the 71’ after he ran it into the box and passed it to the right for Richie Laryea when then cut back inside to Davies for his second of the night in a strong return to BC Place.

In the 85’ Lucas Cavallini fresh off the bench scored his 17th goal for Canada. Cavallini received a pass from Samuel Adekugbe inside the box and scored right in front of the net for Canada’s fourth and final goal of the night.

Milan Borjan got the start in goal for Canada. Alistair Johnston, Kamal Miller, Samuel Adekugbe and Steven Vitória formed the defence, with captain Atiba Hutchinson and Stephen Eustáquio and Alphonso Davies playing in the midfield. Tajon Buchanan, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David were the forwards.

John Herdman brought on Samuel Piette, Laryea and Junior Hoilett in place for Hutchinson, Larin and David (66’). Ike Ugbo and Lucas Cavallini subbed in for Buchanan and Davies (76’).
