Match Report

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team officially secured a spot for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in style with a 4:0 victory against Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto.

Canada came out firing to start the match, creating chances early and often. The first real chance came in the 4’ when Jonathan David made a powerful run through four Jamaican defenders and found a way to get the ball to Cyle Larin who was denied twice by the Jamaica goalkeeper.

In the 6’, Junior Hoilett fired a shot from just outside of the penalty area that was caught by the keeper.

Canada opened the scoring following some brilliant build-up play in the 13’. Samuel Adekugbe broke down the left wing, and then gave the ball to Hoilett. Hoilett picked out a square pass to Stephen Eustaquio in the middle of the pitch and then Eustaquio slotted a perfectly weighted pass through the Jamaica central defenders to Larin, who turned and finished the play with his first touch to make it 1:0.

Just two minutes later, David had an opportunity to double the lead after receiving a pass from Larin, but he dragged the shot just wide of the post (15’).

In the 21’ Adekugbe found himself all alone down the wing, and played in a low cross to Tajon Buchanan whose first-time shot went high over the goal.

In the 24’, Buchanan had another fantastic opportunity right in front of goal but his shot was blocked by a Jamaican defender.

Jamaica’s best opportunity of the match came in the 32’ with a low shot from the top of the box, but Borjan was able to make the save.

In the 38’, Hoilett played a wonderful ball down the sideline with the outside of his foot for Adekugbe to run onto. Adekugbe found Larin, but the striker’s shot went wide.

The offensive pressure paid off just before half time as Canada doubled the lead. On the second phase of a corner kick from Eustaquio, David played in a second cross that Buchanan took a lovely touch to control the ball before firing it into the back of the goal from right in front of the net to make it 2:0 (44’).

In the second half, Canada continued to put in a strong defensive performance, not giving Jamaica an opportunity to get back into the match while continuing to create chances of their own.

In the 78’, David touched the ball to Lucas Cavallini who took a swing on the bounce, but his shot was saved by the Jamaican keeper, Jason Blake.

In the 80’, Blake came up with a huge save to deny Cavallini after Adekugbe slid in a great pass behind the Jamaica defence to the striker.

Hoilett made it 3:0, digging the ball out from under his feet and firing it away after making a run into the box that was picked out by a pass from Buchanan (83’).

In the final minute of the match, Canada got a fourth goal thanks to an own goal as Adrian Mariappa tried to clear away a low cross from Adekugbe (89’).

Canada’s Starting XI saw Milan Borjan get the nod in goal and wore the captain’s armband. Samuel Adekugbe, Doneil Henry, Richie Laryea, and Scott Kennedy formed the back line. Stephen Eustaquio, Tajon Buchanan, and Jonathan Osorio started in midfield, with Junior Hoilett, Cyle Larin, and Jonathan David up front.

John Herdman made a triple substitution with 30 minutes remaining, bringing on Atiba Hutchinson, Lucas Cavallini, and Alistair Johnston in place of Henry, Larin, and Laryea (63’). Liam Fraser later came on for Eustaquio (70’) and Kamal Miller replaced Osorio (73’).
