Match Report

Canada won 4:2 over Guatemala in their second group match at the 2019 Concacaf Men's Under-17 Championship. Jayden Nelson scored a hat trick and Kamron Habibullah scored a single as Canada improved to second place in Group F standings with one match remaining. Canada will next face Barbados on 6 May after which three nations from the group will advance to the competition's knock-out phase.

FIRST HALF:
Canada initiated the attack with a pair of rushes into the Guatemala end inside the first minute. In the second minute, Jayden Nelson then intercepted a Diego Santis pass at the top of the penalty area. With one touch into the box, Nelson shot it past the sliding goalkeeper into the left corner of the goal.

In the sixth minute, Guatemala scored the equaliser. Miguel Ardon launched a high ball into the box and captain Andy Palencia outjumped the Canada defence to head it into the goal.

In the 30th minute, Habibullah made it 2-1. The play started with a throw in by Keesean Ferdinand who threw it back into his own half to Maxime Bourgeois, who played it to Nathan Demian who then played it up to Ralph Priso-Mbongue. Heading back on the attack, Priso-Mbongue played it towards Nelson who neatly deflected the ball into the penalty area's left side for Habibullah, with defenders charging, to bend a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper into the net at the far post.

Four minutes later, Canada gave themselves a two-goal cushion as Nelson scored his second goal of the match. On the goal, Tomas Giraldo collected a loose ball in the Canadian box, cleared it up to Habibullah, wh then knocked it forward into the path of Nelson. Up the left flank, Nelson one-touched the ball by Anderson Gaitan, outpaced him to the ball, took three touches as he charged the goal, and gently with his right foot lifted the ball over the goalkeeper into the far right corner of the goal.

SECOND HALF:
Late in the second half, Guatemala scored their second goal on a Carlos Lemus corner kick. From the Lemus kick, Marcelo Saraiva deflected it on and Diego Santis headed it past Canada's goalkeeper.

In the 90th minute, Nelson completed his hat trick as Canada regained their two-goal lead. With Guatemala pressing for the equaliser, Julian Altobelli intercepted a short pass in the Canadian half, played it up to Habibullah who then quickly unleashed Nelson upfield. Nelson then beat the defender, side stepped the goalkeeper, and with his left foot rolled the ball into the open net.
