Match Report

Canada fell 2:3 to USA after hitting the crossbar in the dying moments of the opening match of the Concacaf Men's Under-17 Championship. Canada held a two-nil lead at the half, fell behind on a trio of USA goals, but in the end couldn't connect for an equaliser in the last 20 minutes.

Jérémie Omeonga and Jacen Russell-Rowe were the goalscorers in the 21st and 22nd minutes before Gianluca Busio (49'), Axel Alejandre (63'), and Giovanni Reyna (69') replied in the second half.

This was Canada's first of three matches in the group phase of the Concacaf Men's Under-17 Championship, with upcoming matches against Guatemala on 4 May and Barbados on 6 May. The top-three nations in the group advance to the knock-out phase.

FIRST HALF:

Midway through the first half, Omeonga opened the scoring with a header at the back post. The second goal was a real team effort with seven players involved. It started from Canada's end on a throw in from David Amla to Julian Altobelli. He fought off the defender and played it back to Gianfranco Facchineri, who then passed it outside right to Deylen Vellios, who then sent the ball up over the half. Omeonga chested down the Vellios ball, played it to Russell-Rowe, who then played it over to the left side for a wide open Matthew Catavolo. Catavolo then played it to the back post for Omeonga to head past the goalkeeper.

Just 68 seconds later, Russell-Rowe scored the second goal on a curling shot from just inside the box. Catavolo again provided the assist on the goal. Damiano Pecile forced a turnover just before the halfway line, Catavolo picked it up, dribbled it up the middle of the field, sent the ball to his left into the path of Russell-Rowe who took three touches to create space. Russell-Rowe found a gap and fired a right-footed shot into the top corner of the goal.

SECOND HALF:
USA countered quickly in the second half as Gianluca Busio cut the lead in half with a volley from inside the box. Then just after the one-hour mark, a Kobe Hernandez-Foster shot deflected and then bounced off a pair of Canadian players, after which Axel Alejandre had no problem knocking in the loose ball past the goalkeeper from inside the six-yard box.

In the 69th minute, USA went ahead on the Giovanni Reyna game winner from a free kick. Reyna curled his low shot past the wall and past the diving goalkeeper.

Canada pushed for an equaliser and nearly got it on a Jayden Nelson shot in added time, but the shot was tipped off the crossbar. Canada tried again and had one last chance on a late foul after Nelson was taken down on the run, but his shot was saved by the American goalkeeper Damian Las.

Canada’s starting XI featured Marc Kouadio in goal, Deylen Vellios at right back, Gianfranco Facchineri and Nathan Demian at centre back, David Amla at left back, and Damiano Pecile, Tommy Giraldo, Julian Altobelli, Jérémie Omeonga-Nkoy, Matthew Catavolo, and Jacen Russell-Rowe from the midfield up through to the attack. In the first half, coach Andrew Olivieri replaced injured Amla with Rohan Goulbourne; in the second half, Olivieri replaced Altobelli with Jamie Dunning (64') and Russell-Rowe with Jayden Nelson (70').

USA's starting XI featured Damian Las (goal), Joseph Scally, Adam Armour, Ael Alejandre, Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Daniel Ulises Leyva, Gianluca Busio, Bryang Kayo, Ricardo Daniel Pepi, Giovanni Alejandro Reyna, and Griffin Yow. In the second half, coach Raphael Wicky replaced Yow with Jack De Vries (64'), Reyna with Gilbert Fuentes (73'), and Pepi with Alfonso Ocampo (90'+2).

Referee Oshane Nation cautioned two players in the match: Canada's Omeonga in the 42nd minute and USA's Scally in the 89th minute.
