Match Report

Canada won 2:0 over New Zealand in their second group match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, thus clinching a spot in the competition’s Knockout Phase Round of 16. Jessie Fleming and Nichelle Prince were the Canada goalscorers while Christine Sinclair hit both the crossbar and post.

It marked the first time that Canada opened with back-to-back wins at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, also the first time that Canada defeated a confederation champion at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The win also extended Canada’s undefeated streak to 10 matches, second longest in program history.

LINEUPS & NOTES:
Canada’s starting XI featured Stephanie Labbé in goal, Jayde Riviere at right back, Kadeisha Buchanan and Shelina Zadorsky at centre back, Ashley Lawrence at left back, and Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt, Janine Beckie, Nichelle Prince, Jessie Fleming and Christine Sinclair from the midfield up through to the attack. In the second half, coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller replaced Riviere with Allysha Chapman (75’), Beckie with Rebecca Quinn (83’), and Prince with Adriana Leon (84’).

Of note, Riviere and Quinn both made their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut. Schmidt, meanwhile, made her 13th career FIFA Women’s World Cup start, moving her into second place on Canada’s all-time list behind only Sinclair (19 starts). She also moved into a tie for third place with 13 appearances (tied with Diana Matheson, behind Sinclair’s 19 and Rhian Wilkinson’s 15 matches).

New Zealand’s starting XI featured Erin Nayler in goal, Catherine Bott at right back, Abby Erceg and Rebekah Stott at centre back, Ali Riley at left back, Olivia Chance at right midfield, Ria Percival and Katie Bowen at centre midfield, Betsy Hassett at left midfield, and Sarah Gregorius and Rosie White up front. In the first half, coach Tom Sermanni replaced injured Bott with Annalie Longo (18’); in the second half, Sermanni replaced Gregorius with Anna Green (62’) and Hassett with Emma Kete (85’).
