Canada lost their second match at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 following a 1:3 defeat to Nigera. Canada opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but were then unlucky to concede a penalty late in the first half which helped chance the outcourse of the game.
Gabrielle Carle opened the scoring and Chinaza Uchendu equalised on the penalty. Joy Bokiri then made it 2-1 on a fortunate bounce in the 46th minute and Chinwendu Ihezuo made it 3-1 after a Canada mistake in the 73rd minute.
FIRST HALF:
The match started with both sides still alive in the group standings, but in need of a victory to better their chances of advancing to the next round. Both sides opted for youth in their lineups, with more than half the fielded players young enough for the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2018.
Nigeria created their first big chance in the 10th minute after the ball was played to Joy Bokiri down the right side. She played it back to Chinaza Uchendu who then centered it to Chinwendu Ihezuo inside the box. Ihezuo’s first touch freed up space for a dangerous shot on goal, but the shot was high above the bar.
Just five minutes later, Canada scored the opening goal after Carle intercepted a Nigeria pass. Carle played a long ball into Rose who kept her calm in the calm and possession until centering a pass to the now onrushing Carle. Despite a bevy of Nigerian defenders, Carle met the ball perfectly inside the box to give Canada a 1-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute, Mousset played a lovely pass down the left side which allowed Rose to use her speed and force the goalkeeper into conceding a corner kick. On the set play, Canada played it to Sarah Stratigakis who played a cross to the far box. Lamontagne, albeit offside, just missed at the back post.
In the 28th minute, Nigeria had a chance after a good run by Rasheedat Ajibade down the right wing. Foster stopped the initial shot, but the ball kept bouncing until Uchendu shot it over the bar.
In the 37th minute, a long free kick nearly created a second goal as Rose muscled her way through a trio of Nigeria defenders. Rose won her chance, but the under-pressure shot was high over the target.
In the 45th minute, Nigeria won their penalty after Uchendu blazed down the left side and fired a high shot that clipped off Bianca St-Georges’ shoulder. Uchendu then stepped up to the spot and fired it past goalkeeper Rylee Foster.
SECOND HALF:
In the opening minute of the second half, an unlucky bounce opened an unexpected chance for Joy Bokiri inside the box. The Canada clearance hit off Ihezuo’s back and fell into the path of Bokiri who fired it into the goal for a 2-1 lead.
In the 53rd minute, Canada’s first chance was a Rose shot just above the box, albeit again through a trio of defenders. Marie Levasseur had done well to head the pass to Rose, but the Nigerian defence limited Rose’s space on the opportunity.
In the 57th minute, Foster made a good save from a Iheuzo header from inside the box. Iheuzo was marked closely by Hannah Taylor, but regardless Foster was quick on her feet to catch the ball in the air.
In the 73rd minute, a Foster miss kick was intercepted by Ihezuo who easily buried Nigeria’s third goal. From a free kick, Foster played a short give and go with Sarah Stratigakis, but Foster’s intended long kick never left the box as the unmarked Ihezuo scored on the open net.
