Match Report

Canada fell to an in-form Haiti with a 2-1 loss on Monday evening. A goal from Sarah Stratigakis from a Jordyn Huitema assist in the 77th minute was cancelled out by a scrambled rebound put home by Mikerline Saint Felix in the 81st, and a penalty put away by Melissa Dacius in the 84th. The game was a re-match of the 2014 CONCACAF Girls' U15 Championship final and Haiti came into it having scored 16 goals over their last two games. Canada were largely able to keep star player Nerilia Mondesir quiet in the March 7 contest at Grenada Athletic Stadium, Grenada, but she won the penalty that put Haiti top of Group A. Canada's second place finish gives them a semi-final against USA, Mexico, or Costa Rica on 11 March.

The line-up saw changes from the 7-0 victory over Grenada, but Canada still controlled the game for long stretches, the Haitian women seemingly happy to sit deep and let the Baby Reds play in front of them. Canada finished the game with 60% of the possession and an 86% pass completion over 325 passes. This led them to taking 18 shots on goal, with 9 of them being on target, but a combination of strong goalkeeping and profligate finishing kept their goal tally at one.

FIRST HALF:

The game started brightly, with both teams contesting territory well. In the 10th minute Jayde Riviere won a free kick just outside the penalty box after being fouled by Roseline Eloissant, but the chance came to nothing. Riviere had a good opportunity to shoot at goal in the 14th, but it was well held by the Haitian keeper Kerly Theus.

Lysianne Proulx got her first feel for the ball just a minute later, Coventina Dumonay putting an effort on frame with a shot from the top left of the box, reminding Canada they were up against much tougher opposition than their previous two games in the group round. The same player took a speculative shot from the right wing in the 22nd minute, hitting the right post with the attempt.

Haiti kept up the pressure and in the 27th minute, Samantha Chang was adjudged to have brought Naphtalie Northe unfairly. The free kick was just outside the box, on the right edge of the D. Captain Nerilia Mondesir stepped up and sent the ball clattering into the left post where it bounced away to safety, much to the relief of the Canadian squad.

Just a few minutes later in the 30th minute, the Baby Reds won a corner from Northe's clearance. Riviere sent the ball into the six yard box where Nahida Baalbaki was waiting to reprise her goal from the Grenada game. This time she couldn't direct her headed attempt far enough away from Kerly Theus, and the Haitian keeper made the save.

In the 43rd minute, Stratigakis found some space in the right channel outside the 18 yard box. Her shot sailed towards the net, beating the keeper but not the post, bouncing harmlessly off the left upright. Canada were doing a good job of keeping possession and moving the ball efficiently, but couldn't find a way through the packed Haiti defence who continued to pose a threat on the counter attack.

SECOND HALF:

Canada came out strong for the second half, Stratigakis taking a shot from left midfield almost straight from kick off, but seeing it sail wide of the left post. Her next effort in the 51st minute was a better one, testing Kerly Theus in the Haitian goal after she let off a long range effort from the top left of the penalty box.

Emma Regan and Nerilia Mondesir traded off-target attempts in the 56th and 57th minutes, and Canada kept up the pressure on the Haitian goal, Anyssa Ibrahim and Jayde Riviere both having chances but failing to cause any trouble for Theus.

Riviere won a free kick for Canada on the left wing in the 61st minute, right by the line of the 18 yard box. After a long delay the cross was put in and Baalbaki had again found space to put an attempt on target. Again, Kerly Theus was equal to the challenge and made the save.

Canada's breakthrough came in the 77th minute. A long ball was sent forward by Faulknor and initially cut out by Saraphina Joseph. Shana Flynn was on the spot to put the second effort in and win the rebound. Flynn was able to release substitute Jordyn Huitema down the right side of the penalty area who put in a low cross through the six yard box. The previously resolute Theus missed the ball, diving over it and leaving both Sarah Stratigakis and Anyssa Ibrahim all alone on the back post, with Stratigakis being the one to convert from three yards out.

Haiti pulled level just four minutes later, after Anyssa Ibrahim had given up a free kick down on the touchline just outside the right edge of the 18 yard box. The ball was floated in and Mondesir was first to it, forcing it goalwards with an awkward, bouncing strike. Lysianne Proulx could only parry it out to the edge of the six yard box and Mikerline Saint Felix was the first to react, slamming home the rebound.

Canadian heartbreak was compounded in the 84th minute when Kennedy Faulknor was adjudged to have fouled Mondesir in the penalty box. The resulting kick from the penalty mark was dispatched by Shelsie Dacius into the bottom right just beyond the grasp of Proulx who had guessed the direction correctly.

Haiti had a lead they wouldn't give up easily, but Canada were still in the game. Two late attempts by Shana Flynn tested Theus, but she proved to be back to her reliable best, keeping the shots out and helping Haiti to a 2-1 win.

In the second half, coach Leszek Borkowski replaced Lovelie Pierre with Mikerline Saint Felix (67') and Mikerline Saint Felix herself was taken off for Dolores Jean Thomas (90'+2).

The referee for the game was Kartiza Guerra from Honduras and she kept the game on a tight leash, awarding a total of 31 fouls over the 90 minutes. In the 35th minute she showed a yellow card to Saraphina Joseph for a late sliding challenge on Sarah Stratigakis. Roseline Eloissant had her name taken after a high foot on Jayde Riviere in the 61st minute, and Mikerline Saint Felix was booked in the 92nd minute for time wasting as she was substituted off. For Canada, Jayde Riviere was booked in the 47th minute for a lunge from behind on Shelsie Dacius.
