Samuel Charron’s fourth goal of a stellar 2015 Parapan Am Games Tournament gave Canada’s Para Team a slight glimmer of hope of a comeback but it came just too late as Canada dropped a tough 2:1 game to Venezuela on Saturday morning.
With the result, Venezuela claimed the bronze medal in the competition.
“I think the boys were a little nervous. I don’t think anybody had a really strong game today but I think they worked hard,” said Head Coach Drew Ferguson. “Unfortunately, we were punished by a team that, maybe, outworked us.”
Jose Quintana gave Venezuela the lead in the 17th minute, capping off a period where the South Americans created a number of chances. Quintana scored from the left side after being played in on Canadian goalkeeper Damien Wojtiw.
Jessi Yari scored the second midway through the second half in the 43rd minute when he converted a two-on-one break for the Venezuelans.
Charron’s goal came deep in second half stoppage time and was a tremendous header from an inch-perfect cross by Vito Proiette.
Charron showed a lot of grit as he was limping heavily after a hard foul just minutes before and had to be helped off the field at the end of the game as he was in visible discomfort.
But players like Charron and Liam Stanley, who are both teenagers, showed signs of what’s to come for this program.
Playing at home gave an added benefit to the Canadian Para program, and that’s being placed in the spotlight in a major multi-sport games. The exposure of this event has already helped attract interest from potential new recruits.
“To get it on TV with game highlights, that’s huge. It will definitely helps with the recruiting side of things and we mentioned that to the players,” said Ferguson. “This is probably helped me a little bit. And all the fans that came out to watch, they’ve appreciated the level and they’ve appreciated the hard work so I think this will help with the exposure.”
In the later game, Brazil knocked off Argentina 3:1 to claim gold.
