Match Report

Canada fell 0:1 to their hosts Germany in a Women's International Friendly match in Paderborn. The match, played during a short FIFA Women's International window, was played in front of 9,781 fans at the Bentelar Arena.

Germany's Leonie Maier scored the lone goal of the match in the 53rd minute. It marked the first time Canada had held Germany scoreless for the first 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod was Canada's footballer of the match.

Maier's goal was the first of her career after a two-on-one opportunity was created down the right side by a Dzsenifer Marozsán takeaway on the left. Marozsán won the ball, moved into the middle, and then played Lena Lotzen on the right just outside the box. With an option to move in on goal or free Maier into the box past the last Canadian defender, Lotzen played Maier who then fired a low shot past the Canadian goalkeeper.

Two of Canada's better chances in the first half featured Christine Sinclair on the attack. On one rush, she drove down the left side before centering a pass to Diana Matheson. The final shot was stopped by German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. On another play down the left, Sinclair timed a volley that dropped just past the target.

In the second half, Sinclair and Busque combined for a opportune chance, but the play had one too many touches and got away.

At the other end of the pitch, McLeod was fantastic on the chances Germany got through. Shortly after the Maier goal, Marozsán won another ball and turned a quick shot on target. McLeod got across and saved the shot that would have otherwise tucked into the left corner of the net.

Then in added time, McLeod made a world-class stop to tip a Fatmire Bajramaj shot from the left over the crossbar.

As for the best save by a Canadian defender, the honour went to Carmelina Moscato who cleared a ball just before it crossed the line late in the match (before the Bajramaj shot).
