Canada lost its CONCACAF group finale in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a lopsided and unbelievable 1:8 loss to the host in the CONCACAF 3rd Round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Qualifiers. Canada conceded four goals on either side of the break.
Jerry Bengtson and Carlo Costly scored hat tricks while Mario Martinez scored two goals. Canadian substitute Iain Hume scored on a free kick in the second half, albeit after the home side already had six goals on the board.
Canada-Honduras lineups:
For this match, Canada's starting XI featured Lars Hirschfeld in goal, David Edgar at right back, André Hainault and Kevin McKenna at centre back, Mike Klukowski at left back, and Nik Ledgerwood, Julian de Guzman, Will Johnson, Tosaint Ricketts, Simeon Jackson and Atiba Hutchinson from the midfield up through to the attack. In the second half, coach Stephen Hart replaced Ledgerwood with Iain Hume (46') and Jackson with Lucas Cavallini (62').
Honduras' starting XI featured Donis Escober in goal, Arnold Peralta at right back, Maynor Figueroa and Victor Bernardez at centre back, Emilio Izaguirre at left back, and Mario Martinez, Luis Garrido, Jorge Claros, Boniek Garcia, Jerry Bengtson and Carlo Costly from the midfield up through to the attack. Eight goals conceded:
This marks the first time Canada has conceded eight goals in a FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match, Canada's worst loss in this competition. Previously, Canada conceded as many as four goals on four separate occasions, including an 0:4 away loss to Trinidad and Tobago on 3 September 2000. Mathematically, Canada's only worse loss at the international "A" level was an 0:8 loss to Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on 18 July 1993. Four different players scored two goals against Canada that day, with five goals in the first half and three more in the second half at Estadio Azteca in Ciudad México.
