The most unlikely of goals scored in the 87th minute by Canada's goalkeeper Quillan Roberts earned the country its first ever point at a FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The late goal secured Canada a 2:2 draw against England and ensures that the team remains in contention to make it to the knock-out stages with one game left to play in Group C.
Goalkeeper Roberts sent a long ball up field late in the match as Canada searched for an equalizer and amazingly the ball took one bounce off the wet pitch and skipped over English keeper Jordan Pickford to level the match in dramatic fashion.
?I was just trying to get it on Sadi Jalali's head,? said Roberts. ?It just took a lucky bounce and went over the goalie.?
Canada came from behind twice in the match to earn the draw and the team's performance earned the heartfelt praise of Head Coach Sean Fleming.
?We just made history!? Fleming proclaimed to his team as they gathered in a huddle on the pitch following the final whistle.
This is Canada's fifth appearance at a FIFA U-17 World Cup, but in all four previous appearances the Canadians failed to earn a single point.
?We're delighted with the result,? Fleming said in the post-match press conference. ?England is a great side. Sometimes we were under pressure, we bent but we did not break. I'm delighted with the resolve and character of our players.?
Canada went down 0:1 to England immediately following the half-time break as Adam Morgan got the faintest of touches on a curling free kick to nod the ball past the frozen keeper Roberts.
The Canadians responded minutes later when Sadi Jalali latched onto a rebound from a Kevin Aleman blast to dispatch the ball past the diving Pickford to level the game at 1:1 in the 50th minute.
Substitute Blair Turgott appeared to have clinched a hard-fought victory for England in the 77th minute with a hammer of a strike into the top corner from 22 yards, but Roberts' late goal sealed a memorable draw for the young Canucks.
With the result Canada moves into third place in Group C with one point.
Uruguay currently leads the group with six points following an added-time goal that clinched a 1:0 victory over Rwanda.
England remains in second place in the group with 4 points, while Rwanda falls to fourth place with zero points.
It is likely that only a victory for Canada in its final group-stage match against Rwanda will be enough to see Fleming's squad through to the Round of 16.
Canada must finish in the top two places in its group or as one of the four highest-ranking third places finishers to advance at Mexico 2011.
The FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011 runs this 18 June to 10 July in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Morelia, Pachuca, Queretaro and Torreón. Canada will next take on Rwanda on 25 June with an 15.00 local kick-off in Pachuca.
